Each serving of Gen matcha is crafted with devotion by Uji tea masters who have inherited the ancient art of tea cultivation. Every leaf is nurtured and refined with the utmost care before it reaches your hands.

The name Gen originates from the Japanese word Yūgen —

a concept that celebrates the beauty found in subtlety, depth, and silence; an aesthetic that transcends words and form.

In a world where inner richness is too often forgotten, we wish to offer a quiet moment of reflection through a single bowl of matcha — a return to serenity, and to oneself.

Please, take a pause. Calm your mind, and savor this tranquil cup.

Uji, the Sacred Land of Tea

Nestled within the thousand-year capital of Kyoto, Uji has long been revered as the sacred heart of Chadō — the Way of Tea.

Since the Edo period, it is said that the finest masters of Uji prepared their most exquisite teas as offerings to the Shogunate. Their craft, refined through generations, endures to this day.

The matcha of Uji is celebrated for its mellow depth and lingering sweetness —

a harmony born of fertile soil, pure water, and the elegance of tradition. Each bowl is an embodiment of grace,

The act of preparing matcha — measuring the tea, pouring the water, whisking the foam, and taking a quiet sip — is, in itself, a journey back to serenity.

Through these gentle gestures, we rediscover the richness that lies within silence and simplicity.

With this spirit, Gen has curated a collection of tea utensils to accompany your moments of tranquility.

The chasen is more than a tool for whisking matcha. It is a delicate brush that brings harmony to the spirit.

As you whisk, the quiet sound of bamboo meeting tea becomes a soft rhythm — a gentle cleansing of the mind, a moment to discover stillness within yourself.

The chasen is not merely for preparation, but for the quiet restoration of the heart.

Each tea caddy is handcrafted in Japan, meticulously shaped by artisans who devote their hearts to every detail.

Within their delicate precision lives the Japanese sensibility — a quiet reverence for tea, and a tender appreciation for its fragrance.

For centuries, people have sought to preserve tea leaves from moisture and light, so that each bowl might offer the purest expression of flavor and aroma.

The double-lidded design — an outer and inner cap that fit together in perfect harmony — gently protects the tea within, maintaining a calm balance of air and freshness.

Today, only a handful of craftsmen in Japan — said to be fewer than ten — carry on this time-honored art.

Feel it with your fingertips — the graceful moment when the lid closes, as if the air itself were softly inhaling.

The act of preparing matcha is a moment to center the mind.
Breathe in its fragrance, and savor the quiet.

Add the Matcha

Using a chashaku (bamboo scoop) or teaspoon, gently place about 1–2 grams of matcha into the tea bowl. (Approx. two scoops with a chashaku, or half to one teaspoon.)

For a smoother texture, sift the matcha beforehand to remove any fine clumps.

Pour the Water

Pour 70–120 ml (2.5–4 oz) of hot water at around 70–80°C (below 175°F).

The amount of water and strength of flavor may be adjusted to your preference.

Whisk with the Chasen

Begin by gently stirring the bottom of the bowl in slow, circular motions. Then, lift the chasen slightly and whisk briskly back and forth with a relaxed wrist, until a fine, smooth froth forms on the surface.

Move calmly, as if your breath itself were guiding the motion.

Savor the Moment

Bring the bowl to your lips and enjoy the mellow richness of the tea. Let its warmth quiet the heart, and allow a moment of stillness to unfold within you.
